About Canine UKBehaviour by design.

National specialists in canine behaviour, rehabilitation and advanced real-world training.

Who we are

WE LOOK AT THE DOG. AND THE WHOLE PICTURE.

At Canine UK, we recognise that behaviour doesn’t exist in isolation. Genetics, health, environment, experiences, learning and lifestyle all influence how a dog behaves.

We look beyond the behaviour itself to understand what contributes to it, why it continues and what needs to change.

Our approach combines behavioural assessment, practical training, rehabilitation and owner education, with strategies tailored to each dog and their circumstances.

We don’t just aim to change behaviour during training. We equip owners with the understanding and skills to maintain progress in everyday life.

Understand the behaviour. Address the causes. Build lasting change.

Behaviour, understood.

At Canine UK, we recognise that behaviour doesn’t exist in isolation. Every dog is influenced by a combination of genetics, health, environment, previous experiences, learning and the people they live with.

Understanding those influences is central to how we work.

We look beyond the behaviour being presented to establish what may be contributing to it, why it continues and what needs to change.

Our approach combines behavioural assessment, practical training, rehabilitation and owner education. We develop realistic strategies that consider both the dog and the circumstances in which they live.

Our objective isn’t simply to change behaviour during a training session. It’s to help owners develop the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to maintain progress in everyday life.

Understand the behaviour. Address the causes. Build lasting change.

Our approach

Our Methodology

Our methodology is grounded in behavioural understanding, clear communication and practical application.

We use a balanced, individualised approach to training and rehabilitation, drawing on a range of methods and equipment appropriate to the dog, the circumstances and the objectives.

Reward, motivation, guidance and accountability all have a place in our work. Our priority is effective, sustainable progress that owners can confidently maintain in everyday life.

The pathway, shaped around you

  1. 01Audit
  2. 02Understand
  3. 03Plan
  4. 04Train
  5. 05Transfer
  6. 06Review
Audit before assumptions.

A behaviour is part of a bigger picture. We begin by understanding what is happening, what may be contributing and what is realistic for your household.

The dog
Health, genetics, rest and individual needs.
The pattern
Behaviour, learning history and the situations around it.
Everyday life
Environment, routine, lifestyle and fulfilment.
The people
Handling, risk and what owners can realistically maintain.

Clarity first. Then the right next step.

A Behavioural Audit is a standalone service, with no obligation to book further training. Puppies under six months and eligible dogs joining our Predation & Chase Rehabilitation programme can start directly.

Practical skills. A plan that fits.

Built for life beyond the session.

  1. Rewards and motivation

Rewarding useful behaviour, building engagement and strengthening the relationship between dog and owner.

  2. Clear communication

Teaching practical skills and improving the timing, consistency and handling that help your dog understand.

  3. Structure and fulfilment

Looking at everyday routines, rest, appropriate activity and the conditions that support learning.

  4. Managed practice

Using suitable settings and controlled exposure while managing risk. We do not ask owners to provoke dangerous behaviour.

  5. Real life transfer

Working towards useful behaviour with the people, places and daily situations that matter to you.

Clear about how we work.

Understand the purpose of the work, not just the name of a method.

Rewards are fundamental.

Positive reinforcement, motivation and strong relationships are important parts of our work. We also use other methods and equipment where the individual dog or situation requires them.

Questions worth asking

  1. Why is this being recommended for my dog?
  2. What alternatives, risks and limitations should we discuss?
  3. How will we judge my dog’s response and know when to change the plan?
  4. What will I need to understand and practise at home?
Safety
Do not deliberately provoke dangerous behaviour.
Welfare
Consider the whole dog and review the response.
Professional boundaries
Training does not replace veterinary care.

Your role and realistic progress

You should understand the plan and learn how to carry the work into everyday life. Progress does not mean the work is complete. Some dogs need ongoing management, and calm neutrality can be a valid goal.

Our Philosophy

Welfare, practice and accountability guide how we assess, design and deliver training for every dog and owner.

Welfare • Practice • Accountability

Our responsibility

THE CANINE UK STANDARD.

Canine UK was built with an ambition that extends beyond the dogs and owners we work with directly.

We want to contribute to higher standards of canine welfare, professional practice and behavioural decision-making across the UK.

Our involvement extends into the wider canine community, including engagement with local authorities, rescue organisations and other professionals responsible for the welfare, management and future of dogs. We believe experienced behavioural professionals have an important role to play in these conversations.

Within our own organisation, that same responsibility is reflected in the standards we expect from every Canine UK professional. Continued education, mentorship, accountability and professional development are fundamental to how our national network grows.

But our measure of progress is bigger than the number of dogs we train.

Cockapoo standing on a woodland path

01 Better-informed owners.

02 Better-equipped professionals.

03 Better behavioural decisions.

04 Stronger rescue and rehoming outcomes.

05 And, ultimately, higher standards of welfare for dogs.

That is the Canine UK Standard.

Our story

Our Founders’ Story

“The dog in front of you should determine the approach, not the label attached to the trainer.”

Canine UK began with two established dog trainers and a shared commitment to helping dogs and their owners.

Lisa Whitehouse had built North Yorkshire Dog Training using a balanced approach to training and behaviour. Positive reinforcement has always been a fundamental part of Lisa’s work, alongside the appropriate use of other training methods and equipment where the individual dog or situation requires it.

James Herrington established South Yorkshire Dog Training and originally worked within a positive-only training framework. A few years ago, James reached out to Lisa because he wanted to broaden his knowledge and understand more about the methodology she was using, particularly with dogs and behavioural problems that required a wider range of training options.

They quickly realised they worked extremely well together.

There was never a divide over the value of positive reinforcement. Both believed in rewarding dogs, building motivation and creating strong relationships between dogs and their owners. What changed was James’s exposure to a broader training framework and the understanding that effective training does not need to sit within one fixed ideology.

As they began working more closely together, sharing cases, knowledge and practical experience, North Yorkshire Dog Training and South Yorkshire Dog Training naturally became more connected.

From that partnership, Canine UK was created.

A major part of that vision is education. We want to help move the industry away from rigid camps, labels and method based thinking, and towards a more informed, evidence led and individual approach to training and behaviour.

That means encouraging professionals and owners to ask better questions, understand why methods work, recognise when different approaches may be appropriate, and judge training by welfare, clarity, suitability and outcome rather than by ideology alone.

At the heart of Canine UK is a simple principle: the dog in front of you should determine the approach, not the label attached to the trainer.

That is the culture we want to build within Canine UK, and the wider conversation we want to help change within the industry.

About James

James Herrington

Co-Founder & Canine Rehabilitation Consultant

James is Co-Founder of Canine UK and an experienced dog trainer with a particular interest in complex behavioural work, rehabilitation and aggression.

James holds Level 2, 3 and 4 Diplomas in Canine Welfare, Training & Behaviour and is a DTC-CDT Certified Dog Trainer through the Dog Training College. He is currently studying towards a bachelor’s degree in Canine Clinical Behaviour, further developing the academic knowledge that supports his extensive practical experience.

Before co-founding Canine UK, James established and ran South Yorkshire Dog Training, building a successful practice working with owners across South Yorkshire and beyond. His journey into professional training originally began through hands-on work with rescue dogs, where an interest in more challenging behaviour developed into a wider focus on rehabilitation.

James initially trained exclusively through positive reinforcement. As the complexity of the dogs he worked with increased, he chose to broaden his education and understanding of approaches outside the methodology in which he had originally trained.

That development brought James and Lisa together. James approached Lisa to further his understanding of balanced training and its application within behavioural work. Professional discussion developed into continued education, collaborative casework and a strong working relationship, ultimately leading to the partnership behind Canine UK.

James has significant practical experience with aggression, reactivity, resource guarding, predation and chase behaviour, nervous and environmentally sensitive dogs, and dogs with established bite histories. His work has also included serious cases involving dogs subject to local authority restrictions following bite incidents.

His approach is calm, practical and individual to the dog. Rather than working from a single methodology, James considers the behaviour, the dog in front of him and the realities of the environment in which the owner needs that dog to function.

James also has extensive experience with e-collar training and communication, including its application within wider training and behavioural programmes where reliability, predation or established behavioural patterns require a structured approach.

Continued professional development remains an important part of James’s work. Alongside his own studies, he contributes to the mentoring and practical development of trainers within the Canine UK team.

Away from work

James shares his life with Roxy, a Malinois × German Shepherd; Rottweilers Koda and Duke; Dachshunds Jammie and Winston; and Boss, a North American Mastiff.

Outside of dogs, he enjoys hiking, strength training, learning, good coffee and vegan food.

Fun fact: James can work calmly with dogs displaying serious aggression, but if he watches a horror film he has to put SpongeBob on afterwards so his brain doesn’t overthink it.

About Lisa

Lisa Whitehouse

Co-Founder & Canine Behaviour Consultant

Lisa is Co-Founder and Canine Behaviour Consultant at Canine UK, bringing more than 20 years of experience with dogs alongside an academic background in psychology and advanced study in canine behaviour.

She holds a BSc in Psychology and a Level 5 Advanced Diploma as a Canine Behaviour Practitioner and is currently studying towards an MSc in Clinical Animal Behaviour. Her particular interest lies in understanding the processes that drive behaviour and translating that knowledge into practical strategies for dogs and their owners.

Lisa’s work is centred around behavioural assessment, case strategy and dogs presenting with established or multifaceted behavioural problems. Her experience includes serious aggression and bite histories, resource guarding, predatory and chase behaviour, separation and confinement related problems, anxiety, hypervigilance, environmental and social sensitivities, and complex rescue and rehoming cases.

Rather than approaching behaviour through a fixed methodology, Lisa considers the whole picture: learning history, genetics, breed traits, environment, emotional state, owner interaction and the function the behaviour serves. Her focus is not simply on stopping what a dog is doing, but understanding why it is happening and determining what needs to change to produce a realistic and sustainable outcome.

Lisa also has specialist experience in the behavioural application of e-collar training, including its integration within wider behaviour modification and rehabilitation programmes. Her work in this area extends beyond private practice as Co-Founder and Chair of the National Association for Professional E-Collar Training (NAPET), where she is involved in professional education, welfare standards and the national discussion surrounding responsible e-collar use.

Her professional work has included UK and international cases, collaboration and engagement with rescue organisations, local authorities and professionals across the wider canine sector. She has also contributed to media discussions on canine behaviour, welfare and modern dog ownership.

Within Canine UK, Lisa’s role extends beyond her own caseload. She supports behavioural case strategy across the team and contributes to the mentorship and development of trainers, particularly where cases require a deeper assessment of the factors driving behaviour.

Away from work

Lisa shares her home with five very different dogs: Monkey and Bella, her Chihuahuas; Margot, her Rottweiler; Moose, a Caucasian Shepherd × German Shepherd; and Ted, a Tibetan Terrier × Maltese.

Away from dogs, she is an unapologetic book nerd who rarely watches television. Her fascination with behaviour extends into a long-standing interest in neuroscience, alongside history and architecture. She also loves hiking, paddle boarding and birds, and is rarely happier than when she has something new to learn.

Fun fact: Lisa has a ridiculous knowledge of birds and will interrupt almost any conversation to point one out. Yes, you were talking. But there’s a kestrel.

Mark Leigh

Dog Training & Behaviour

Experienced trainer with a background in competitive gundog work, individualised training and helping dogs and handlers communicate more effectively.

Mark’s passion for dog training began in 2010, inspired by a love of training spaniels for gundog work. Over the years, he has had the opportunity to work alongside many experienced trainers, helping to shape the breadth of knowledge he brings to his work today.

What began with foundational training developed into advanced gundog work and competition. Mark has successfully competed with his own dogs, winning multiple working tests and receiving awards in field trials.

After seeing how many people were struggling with their dogs, that passion developed into a desire to help both dog and handler enjoy a happier life together.

Experience has shown Mark that no two dogs are the same. Every dog brings individual traits, mannerisms and training needs, whether the goal is better everyday manners or support with more complex behavioural concerns. His approach focuses not only on training the dog, but on teaching owners how to communicate effectively, drawing on a range of methods and techniques to help create a balanced and enjoyable life together.

Fun fact: A quick conversation with Mark about spaniels can turn into a full gundog-training masterclass without warning.

Canine UK training team

Mark Portray

Dog Training & Behaviour

Mark has worked across a broad range of training approaches under the mentorship of experienced trainers, building extensive practical experience with everything from everyday training through to complex behavioural and aggression cases.

His approach is balanced, practical and adaptable, recognising that different dogs, owners and situations require different approaches. He has particular experience with high drive dogs and cases requiring clear communication, structure and confident handling.

Alongside his work with Canine UK, Mark currently serves as a part time military dog handler, working predominantly with Belgian Malinois and German Shepherds. His role involves preparing dogs for operational deployment, including detection, indication and patrol work, while continuing his development towards Class 1, 2 and 3 handler qualifications.

His military experience brings another dimension to his training, particularly around working drives, reliability and understanding dogs bred to perform demanding roles.

Mark continues to develop his knowledge across both pet and operational dog training, bringing experience from each environment into his wider approach.

Fun fact: Mark spends his working days handling military Malinois… then goes home to his beautiful French Bulldog. Quite the gear change.

Connor Gent

Puppy Development and Basic Obedience

Developed through Canine UK’s mentorship and trainer development pathway, with practical experience working across a wide range of breeds, temperaments and behavioural challenges.

Connor’s route into professional dog training began with his own highly reactive German Shepherd cross. Experiencing first hand the difference that clear, consistent and structured training could make sparked an interest that quickly developed into working with dogs professionally.

Alongside his training work, Connor built and ran a dog walking business specialising in dogs with existing or previous behavioural issues, including large and powerful breeds. This gave him extensive real world handling experience and helped shape the calm, practical approach he brings to his work today.

Connor has completed Level 4 studies in Canine Behaviour, Welfare and Training, alongside Level 3 studies in Canine Nutrition. Before moving into dog training, he spent 15 years in the health and fitness industry, bringing a strong background in coaching and structured progression to his work with both dogs and their owners.

Fun fact: Connor can tell you exactly how many calories are in your lunch. He’d much rather you showed him your dog.

Matt Dalton

Dog Training & Behaviour

Experienced dog trainer working across everything from puppy development and everyday training through to reactivity and more complex behavioural cases.

Matt’s journey into dog training began with his own dog, whose significant behavioural challenges sent him down a path of learning that ultimately became a career. He went on to mentor and work within another dog training company, developing his practical handling skills and gaining experience across a wide range of dogs and behaviours.

Wanting to continue progressing and broaden both his knowledge and practical skill set, Matt joined Canine UK through our trainer development pathway. Working alongside the wider team gives him the opportunity to continue developing his approach, gain experience across different areas of training and behaviour, and learn from trainers with varied backgrounds and specialisms.

Matt believes good trainers never stop learning. He brings that mindset to every dog he works with, adapting his approach to the individual dog and owner rather than relying on a single way of doing things.

For Matt, the most rewarding part of the job is seeing the difference effective training can make to everyday life for both dog and owner, and helping people get back to actually enjoying life with their dogs.

Fun fact: If Matt ever turns up without a hat, we’ll assume something has gone terribly wrong.

Andrea Macpherson

Dog Training & Behaviour

Andrea is a qualified canine behaviourist and trainer with a background spanning veterinary practice, professional dog training and the wider pet industry.

Her journey began with Eva, her German Shepherd cross who started life as a street dog in Romania. Faced with a dog whose past experiences clearly shaped how she responded to the world, Andrea wanted to understand what was driving those responses rather than simply trying to stop them. That curiosity ultimately led to her Advanced Diploma in Canine Behaviour.

Andrea recognises that no single method, tool or technique is appropriate for every dog. Reward, fair correction, structure and clear communication all have their place, with decisions based on the individual dog and what they need.

Her veterinary experience adds another dimension to her work, particularly when considering whether pain, health or physical factors could be contributing to a problem.

Andrea particularly enjoys working with reactivity, anxiety, frustration and over arousal. Her aim is to move beyond labels such as difficult, stubborn or untrainable, work out what is actually going on and give owners practical ways forward.

At home, Andrea has Eva and German Shepherd Rocky, who originally arrived as a boarder and simply never left.

Fun fact: Rocky came for a stay. Several years later, Andrea is still yet to check him out.

Canine UK training team

Laura Sinfield

Dog Training & Behaviour

Laura joined Canine UK through our mentorship and trainer development pathway, bringing existing practical experience and a desire to continue developing her skills across more complex training and behavioural cases.

Her approach is balanced, practical and centred around training the individual dog rather than applying the same method to every case. She has a particular interest in recall, impulse control, scent work and helping owners understand the reasons behind their dog’s behaviour.

Laura has a real passion for spaniels and high drive dogs, particularly helping owners understand the natural instincts that influence behaviour. Her focus is on giving those instincts appropriate outlets while developing the control and reliability needed for everyday life.

Through Canine UK, Laura continues to broaden her experience across different breeds, behaviours and training challenges, working alongside the wider team and drawing on their combined knowledge where a case requires additional input.

She particularly enjoys helping owners make training practical and achievable, building it into everyday life rather than treating it as something that only happens during a training session.

Fun fact: Laura owns an apothecary. We’re not saying she’s a witch, but we’re also not ruling it out.

Canine UK training team

James Burton

Trainer Development & Mentorship

James is currently progressing through Canine UK’s mentorship and trainer development pathway, building his practical experience and developing his skills across training and more complex behavioural cases.

Alongside his mentorship, James runs his own dog walking business and has a particular interest in scent work, gundog fulfilment and providing appropriate outlets for high drive dogs.

His current approach is primarily based around positive reinforcement, structured engagement and breed specific fulfilment. As his experience develops, James is also learning to recognise where those approaches may have limitations and when a dog or owner would benefit from the input of a more experienced member of the Canine UK team.

Before moving into the canine industry, James was a prison officer, giving him plenty of experience remaining calm, observant and level headed in challenging situations.

At home, James has three dogs of his own, two spaniels and a Border Collie, so apparently he doesn’t believe in spending his days off relaxing either.

Fun fact: James voluntarily lives with two spaniels and a Border Collie. We feel that tells you most of what you need to know.

Erin Delamar

Administration & Client Support

Erin oversees the administration and client support at Canine UK, helping coordinate the day to day running of the business and providing an important link between our clients and training team.

As Lisa’s daughter, Erin has grown up around dogs and the world of professional dog training, although her own career initially took her into education. She trained and worked as a primary school teacher before stepping away from teaching to raise her young family.

Her background in education has given Erin strong organisational, communication and people skills, all of which transfer naturally into her role at Canine UK. She manages client enquiries, bookings and ongoing administration while helping coordinate the team across our different locations and services.

As Canine UK continues to grow, Erin plays a key role in maintaining the organisation behind the scenes, ensuring communication remains clear and that both clients and trainers have the support and information they need.

Outside of Canine UK, Erin enjoys travelling and has already explored an impressive amount of the world.

Fun fact: Erin loves a list. If it’s not on a list, it probably isn’t happening. And yes, there’s probably a list of her lists.

Catherine Mitchell

Welfare & Canine First Aid

Catherine supports Canine UK within our welfare division, bringing specialist knowledge in canine first aid, welfare and practical care.

She is a Level 3 Pet First Aid Instructor (VTQ) and delivers certified pet first aid training to dog owners and canine professionals throughout the UK. Her courses are designed to give people the practical knowledge and confidence to respond appropriately if a dog becomes ill or injured.

Before moving into this area, Catherine spent several years working with children, including supporting children with special educational needs. That background has given her a calm, patient and practical approach to teaching, which now carries through into the first aid training she delivers.

Within Canine UK, Catherine helps support our welfare standards and first aid provision across the organisation. As standard, every member of the Canine UK team is certified in canine first aid, reflecting the level of care and professional responsibility we expect across all areas of the business.

Jodie Lane

Grooming & Coat Care

Jodie supports Canine UK with over 15 years of professional dog grooming experience, bringing a huge amount of practical knowledge, skill and breed specific understanding to the team.

She genuinely loves what she does and has built her experience across a wide range of breeds, coat types and temperaments. Jodie keeps up to date with modern grooming techniques and best practice, while always putting the individual dog’s comfort and welfare first.

At Canine UK, Jodie provides guidance around grooming, coat care and practical grooming strategies, whether that is routine maintenance, breed specific requirements or supporting dogs who may find grooming more difficult.

She is also available to advise on and oversee welfare grooms, helping ensure that grooming decisions are made with the dog’s health, comfort and overall welfare in mind.

Jodie will also be hosting Q&A sessions within The Academy, giving members access to her knowledge and experience across grooming, coat care, handling and welfare related questions.

Jodie shares her life with two Pomeranians, Rupert and Winnie, so it is probably just as well that grooming is her profession. Their coats certainly keep her standards high.

Her experience means she is a valuable source of support for both the Canine UK team and our clients, particularly where grooming, handling and welfare overlap.

Fun fact: Jodie could groom almost any dog and make it look like a walk in the park. She doesn’t even flinch at a Chihuahua giving attitude.
