ProfileLabrador · severe dog aggression, fatal bite history and resource guarding
01 · The presenting picture
Bailey arrived with severe dog-directed aggression and a history of serious bites, including an incident that resulted in another dog's death. He also resource guarded his owners and physical space.
He had been under-exposed around other dogs and was overweight, creating additional welfare and potential health concerns alongside the behavioural risk.
02 · What the audit identified
Bailey required strict safety management from the outset. A correctly fitted muzzle in public was necessary while recall, obedience and behaviour around dogs were developed.
His limited social experience, repeated explosive responses, owner and space guarding, routine and physical condition all formed part of the picture. The work therefore had to address behaviour, management, fulfilment and diet together.
03 · The Canine UK strategy
- Maintain public muzzle use while developing solid recall and off-lead obedience.
- Use intensive, controlled exposure around selected neutral dogs to teach calm coexistence without forced interaction.
- Build a structured crate routine, predictable rest and clearer household boundaries.
- Address owner and space guarding through controlled access, consistent handling and reduced opportunity to rehearse the behaviour.
- Adjust diet and body condition to support Bailey's health, stamina and long-term welfare.
04 · Rehabilitation outcome
- Bailey developed full recall, off-lead obedience, strong lead manners, reliable crate behaviour and the ability to work successfully for multiple handlers.
- Through carefully controlled exposure, he learned to coexist around dogs without the explosive bursts seen previously. At handover he was not displaying the dog reactivity that had brought him into rehabilitation.
- His history has not been erased. Public muzzle use, structured routines and sensible management remain part of giving him as much safe freedom and quality of life as possible.
05 · Owner transfer and maintenance
The owner plan preserves public muzzle use, controlled dog exposure, recall practice, crate and place routines, clear boundaries around people and space, and the dietary changes needed to protect Bailey's health.
