01 · The presenting picture

Hugo had a history of chasing horses and becoming highly aroused around valuable movement. As pressure increased he could become emotionally unsettled and difficult to manage.

His owner did not just need performance in a training field. The objective was a dog who could listen, recover and remain under control in countryside and public environments.

02 · What the audit identified

The issue was wider than one failed command. Hugo needed a complete communication system, better control of drive, a dependable recall and planned exposure to the environments that previously caused escalation.

Avoiding movement indefinitely would not produce reliable everyday behaviour. The work had to be developed around real-life pressure in controlled stages.

03 · The Canine UK strategy

  • Develop recall and close-position work around steadily increasing distraction.
  • Use controlled exposure around horses and movement to replace fixation with neutrality.
  • Establish clear handling before arousal reached the point where thinking deteriorated.
  • Practise settling in public so Hugo learned to switch off as well as perform.
  • Proof the work across fields, towns and appropriate busy spaces.

04 · Observed progress

  • Hugo progressed to calm, structured work around horses and showed improved off-lead reliability.
  • He became better able to settle in public environments and remain available to the handler around distraction.
  • The objective was not merely to stop chasing in one moment, but to develop a dog able to think clearly when movement and pressure were present.

05 · Owner transfer and maintenance

The owner needed to keep the same command language, practise across varied environments and continue to balance freedom with clear responsibility.
