01 · The presenting picture

Paco entered residential work with pulling, fixation, lunging, barking, over-stimulation, unreliable recall and challenging crate behaviour.

The goal included safer freedom, but that freedom first had to be supported by impulse control, engagement and responses that held up around real-world movement.

02 · What the audit identified

Paco needed a clearer distinction between recall, close-position work, leave-it and release cues, together with enough structured play to keep the handler relevant.

Constant pressure risked creating more frustration. Training needed to balance accountability with food, play, affection and careful work within his energy thresholds.

03 · The Canine UK strategy

  • Build lead manners, recall, close work and static obedience before increasing freedom.
  • Develop impulse control around dogs, livestock, people, traffic and movement.
  • Use structured tug and ball play to improve engagement and provide an appropriate outlet.
  • Proof skills across roads, fields, car parks, a garden centre and café environment.
  • Transfer handling to the family with clear guidance on long-line use and continued practice.

04 · Rehabilitation outcome

  • Paco's handover documented improved lead manners, reduced fixation, lunging and barking, stronger recall and a clearer command system.
  • He demonstrated dog, people and traffic neutrality across varied environments and was handled confidently by the family during transfer.
  • The next phase preserved a long line where appropriate while confidence and reliability continued to develop outside the training programme.

05 · Owner transfer and maintenance

The family needed to maintain clarity without overworking Paco, use play and reinforcement deliberately and keep off-lead freedom proportional to demonstrated reliability.
